PRESTIGE
DES CUIVRES
All around the world, young talented musicians are willing to compare their
level with others. That's the reason why, in 1995, the Department of
Upper-Alsace created
its first international competition for brass.
A first issue
dedicated to the trumpet took place in 1995 at the Dominicains in Guebwiller,
allowing this international competition, entitled "Prestige des
Cuivres", to enter the restricted circle of great international music
competitions.
The competition will occur every two years as follows :
1995 : Prestige of the trumpet
1997 : Prestige of the tuba
1999 : Prestige ot the trombone
2001 : Prestige of the Horn and brass ensembles

THE COMPETITION
The first issue of the worldwide "Prestige des cuivres" took place in
the polymusical centre of the Dominicains in Guebwiller from September 28th to
October 7th 1995. Bernard Soustrot was in charge of the artistic direction.
Young trumpet players from all around the world performed in front of a renowned
international jury and gave the best of themselves to the great delight of a
large public.Twelve countries -Germany, England, Belgium, Danemark, Spain,
United States, France, Hungary, Japan, Slovakia, Switzerland, Yougoslavia- were
represented among the 65 candidates. The candidates performed within three
different categories according to their age :
Junior (up to 16 years old)
Espoir (up to 18 years old)
Prestige (from 18 to 30 years old).

: TUBA
THE
COMPETITION
The second competition "Prestige des cuivres", dedicated to tuba and
euphonium, took place at the Dominicains of Guebwiller from September 19th to
28th 1997. Organised by the Conseil Départemental pour la Musique et la
Culture, this competition was placed under the artistic direction of Bernard
Soustrot.
This competition was particularly awaited by the french participants because it
was the first time that an event was dedied to these instruments in France.
64 candidates among the 85 who registered have taken part at the competition.
The represented countries were : Germany, Britain, Argentina, Belgium, Denmark,
Spain, United-States, France, Hungary, Japan, Luxembourg, Norway, Netherlands,
Slovakia, Switzerland, Ukraine.
For this second issue, the candidates performed within three different
categories according to their age :
Espoir Euphonium (18 years old)
Prestige Euphonium (32 years old)
Prestige Tuba (32 years old).

1999
: TENOR TROMBONE and BASS TROMBONE
The third issue of the
international competition was dedicated in 1999 to the tenor and bass trombone.
It took place at the Dominicains in Guebwiller from September 19th to 26th. Michel
BECQUET, one of the most renowned trombonists on the international stage, was
president of the jury and artistic adviser.
The rate of participation was exceptionaly high, more than 125 candidates from
30 countries all around the world being registered in both categories, wich
predicted a week full of suspense.

The fourth World
Competition "Prestige des Cuivres", international Philip Jones
competition, has found place at the Centre Polymusical des Dominicains in
Guebwiller, from September 18th to 23rd, 2001.
31 candidates were registered for the Horn discipline, under the presidency of
André CAZALET : less candidates than for the previous editions, but of an
extraordinary high level.
The category "brass band" was placed under the direction of Michel
BECQUET.

The 1st prize has been carried off by Renate HUPKA, student at the "Hans
Eisler Hochschule" in Berlin. She has performed magnificently the creation
from Julien-François ZBINDEN. The 2nd prize has been won by Pierre-Yves BENS
(F), horn soloist at the "Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire".

TUBULENCES, composed by David GUERRIER and Anne-Laure at the trumpet,
Julien MERIGLIER at the horn, Antoine GANAYE at the Trombone and Arnaud
BOUKHITINE at the tuba, has already won a prize at the tuba competition of 1997.
KIMOIZ quartet is composed by Frédéric BOULAIN,
Alexandre FAURE , Christophe SANCHEZ et Cédric VINATIER, all
trombonist.
2003 :
TUBA/EUPHONIUM and BRASS
BAND
The
fifth issue of the international Philip Jones competition was dedicated to the
euphonium, the tuba and the brass ensembles. From 12 to 20 September, 2003
candidates, members of the jury and audience met in the corridors of the former
convent, “Les Dominicains”, in Guebwiller with the sounds of the “big”
brass.
180
musicians from 24 countries from all over the world registered even knowing that
at the end two prizewinners for each discipline would be nominated.
9
international renowned personalities composed the jury under the presidency of
Anthony Plog. Unfortunately Mr. Becquet missed the competition because of a
hospitalization due to a car accident.
