The
« Conseil Départemental pour la Musique et la Culture de
Haute-Alsace » created the first issue of the international Philip
Jones competition in 1995. This
cycle of biennial international contests is devoted to the trumpet, the
tuba and the euphonium, the trombone, the horn and the brass ensembles. It
is mentioned among the greatest competitions organised in Europe and it is
a member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions (FMCIM).
Bernard
Soustrot, Michel Becquet and the lamented Philip Jones, were successively
president of the jurys, composed of the most eminent specialists in the
international music world. The
prizewinners, selected through candidates from all over the world, have an
excellent level, even exceptional. The
Mulhouse Symphony Orchestra accompanies the finales and the final
concerts. For
every contest, thanks to the financial support of the “Conseil Général
du Haut-Rhin” (state’s representative), the CDMC commissions new and
original works to renowned composers, in order to expand the soloist
repertory for brass. During
the competitions, the CDMC invites great soloists and ensembles such as
B.Bowman, S.Mead, B. Soustrot, M. Becquet, F.Thuillier, I.Milhiet, the Göteborg
Brass Band, the London Brass, Epsilon, the German Brass, the Canadian
Brass. The
edition of September 2005 is devoted to the trumpet and brass quintet. Honorary
